About Us

SERVICES
Worship, 'the highest activity of the human spirit', is central to our life at Straiton Church.  Services are held every Sunday throughout the year at 12 Noon - a traditional service of worship in which we come together to engage with God, and strengthen our faith in Jesus Christ.  The Sacrament of Holy Communion is celebrated on the first Sunday of June and November, while the Sacrament of Baptism and Marriage Services take place by arrangement.  Broadly speaking, our services follow the Christian Year, marking the major seasons and festivals.  Occasional services are held to mark national and community events.  A shared service with nearby Crosshill and Kirkmichael Parish Churches is held on Good Friday and on the World Day of Prayer in March.  The congregations use the three Churches in rotation.

THE CHURCH GUILD
The Church of Scotland Guild - founded in 1887 as The Church of Scotland Woman's Guild - seeks to encourage both women and men to express their faith in worship, prayer and meaningful action.  In 1997 a new constitution was adopted, and the organisation re-named The Church of Scotland Guild.  While women probably remain a majority in its membership, men are now playing a more active part in the Guild's activities at national and local level.

Our Church has an enthusiastic Guild of women and men, meeting in the McCandlish Hall on the second Wednesday of each month from October until March.  All are welcome to attend Guild meetings, whether members of the fellowship or not.

It has been said that The Church of Scotland Guild, with about 20,000 members, is one of the largest voluntary organisations in Scotland, taking as its motto words from Acts 27: 23 - "Whose we are and Whom we serve".  In Straiton Guild we are conscious that we are children of the living God, striving in a rural context to serve Him in our lives.

SOCIAL ACTIVITIES
As a congregation, we promote a programme of social activities each year, not only as a fundraising exercise for our Church, but also to strengthen our links with the wider community we seek to serve.  The annual Sponsored Walk in June has proved a popular event for more than twenty-five years, while concerts and other social evenings are held regularly in the McCandlish Hall.  The Church has also hosted occasional musical and other events, and the Kirk Session is willing to consider its use for an alternative, providing this does not undermine its integrity as a place of Christian worship.

COMMUNITY CONSCIOUSNESS
Being a small, rural congregation, our members are naturally well-integrated into other organisations and agencies in Straiton.  The minister has regular involvement in the Primary School, and is presently a Trustee and Chairman of the Hall Committee. The local branch of the SWI (Scottish Womens' Institutes), the Picnic Committee and the Village Co-operative that runs Straiton Stores, the local shop, are inter-connected with the Church through their membership.  At a time when it is said that the 'community consciousness' of a previous age has waned, it still abounds in Straiton, the Church playing a significant part in sustaining it.  Our overseas link has long been established by the collecting of shoe boxes for distribution in Eastern Europe through Blythswood Care, a project undertaken in partnership with our 'sister' Church at Kirkmichael.
